But here’s a tip. It’s a bit of insider clue into how to get the most out of your vacation. A large city is best viewed from the point of view of the people who live and work there on a daily basis. They know all the best places to go that are just a little bit off the beaten track. They know where the best food, the best shopping, and even the best views are.

You can find this in any city. There is a district that is entirely a “touristy” area, filled with those flashy, crowded streets that people that visit feel they must see and enjoy. In actuality, the best part of your trip might take place outside of those limits in the outskirts of the city. Go a little off the beaten tourist track when you go on vacation. You’ll have some great stories to tell when you come home.

For fashionistas, the biggest problem in packing seems to be in shoes. First of all, are those three inch slingback leopard print pumps comfortable? I’m going to guess no. Are they practical? Definitely not. Traveling means having to make sacrifices in fashion for practicality. When traveling to another country it’s a good idea to limit yourself to three pairs of shoes. First, a pair of sandals as Israel gets very warm. Second, a pair of sneakers. These are going to be best for walking tours and days where you’re walking a lot. Third, you’ll probably want a pair of shoes for more formal occasions like going out to a nice dinner. Instead of toting around several pairs of shoes not knowing what you’ll want to wear that night, try bringing along a pair of neutral ballerina flats. This ensures that no matter what you wear, you will be able to wear these shoes and be comfortable!

Of course you’re going to need the necessities like clothes and such, but do you know about the other accessories that you should have with you at all times while you’re traveling abroad? You should bring a hat with you because the sun is so bright here, even brighter than you’re used to that you’ll want protection. Even though it’s also hot, you may want to consider loose and light long sleeves and pants to protect your skin from the beating sun. Don’t forget your sunscreen either!

Women, carry a big purse. I know you will probably not want to carry around a large bag, but it’s a good idea to have a skirt and a headscarf with you in case you want to visit some of the holy sites in Jerusalem. You should also always carry a bottle of water with you as dehydration among tourists is common. So pack light, but pack what you need.

It’s sort of the same principle as the New Orleans tip. Traveling to these well known places on holidays that are affiliated with the location is going to be crowded and most likely expensive. Planning a trip during the off peak times of the year is a must for the well seasoned globe trotter like my dad. He’s been wanting to go to Israel for a few years now and recently racked up enough vacation time to make it happen. He decided to book his ticket after Passover because he thought that it would be more economical. He was absolutely right. So if you’ve been waiting to go to Israel on a trip, wait no longer. Now is the time!

Arranging a trip really quickly can help create a huge ball of stress in the pit of one’s stomach. Nobody wants to be under that kind of pressure, especially when such long flights are involved. But then things happen and people, be it for a work related emergency or family emergency, often have to high tail it out of their homes and onto a flight. The resulting travel can feel jarring and abrupt.

If you’re more interested in some cool landscapes than in the crowded streets of Tel Aviv you definitely need to check out the Ramon Crater. This is the largest crater on earth, reaching 500 meters at it’s deepest point. It’s almost heart shaped so the ridge  is a great place for a photo opportunity for couples traveling together.

Another place that has a breathtaking beauty and story is the mountain fortress of Masada. This amazing place has a strong connection to the past. It sits on a rocky plateau that overlooks the Dead Sea. You can hike to the top if you’re feeling up to it, otherwise you can take a cable car to the top. Since it gets really hot around midday here, it’s recommended that you visit Masada in the early morning or early evening.

First, you’ve got to float around in the dead sea. Not only does this fulfill a sort of touristy need to do something like this in the country, but it just feels really good and it’s good for you! The dead sea minerals have been known to sooth skin and provide nutrients. Careful, it can get crowded on hot days. Also, no diving!

Second, you need to go out and tour the Old City. Not only does this part of Israel hold immense religious significance for a number of the world’s religions, it is also a most beautiful place to see. You may want to plan an entire day or even a few to see this enormous part of town which includes the Dome of the Rock, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Temple Mount, The Western (Wailing) Wall, and al-Aqsa Mosque.

I’m not talking about copies for your business meeting (although you might want to bring several of those too) you’re going to want to copy your passport, itineraries, and other travel documents before you head off. Make at least two copies. You’ll want to keep the copies and the originals with you on the plane in your carry on. You’ll also want to leave another copy with someone at home. This is just to make sure that if the unthinkable happens and you lose your documentation, you have a backup.

Most embassies will take copied documents if you can prove your identity in some way and have someone vouch for you. Also, having the copy will allow them to verify the authenticity of your passport number etc, and that will be able to get you home.

First of all, book the best seat you can. A flight to Israel is long and there are plenty of sights to see, why not try to get a window seat? If you’re planning on sleeping on the plane, and let’s face it that’s not a bad idea, try finding a seat in business class that has a reclined seat. Business class travel is often more comfortable because it has more room.

Bring something to entertain you. Nowadays some airlines offer wifi when you get to cruising altitude. This means you can bring along a laptop, tablet, or other electronic device that will keep you entertained. Load up your laptop with a few movies before you fly and be sure to always have a few recent magazines stashed in your carry on.

Speaking of carry on bags, don’t over stuff it. A backpack or small bag is sufficient. It’s also easier to find space for on the plane!

Many airlines these days are rewarding business class travel passengers with perks and amenities to lure them into buying a slightly higher ticket. You shouldn’t worry about that extra cost, however, it seems like a pittance when compared to what you get in return.

While flying business class you will have more privacy and more comfortable accommodations. Most of the time your seat will fold flat into a bed instead of merely leaning backwards. You will also notice more privacy because there are less seats in the business class accommodations.

You’ll also find that you have more food options than those in coach class. Not only will your food be a better selection but your drink menu is also larger. You will have more pick of wine and other beverages with a business class ticket.

Better accommodations, better food and booze, and better entertainment! A lot of airlines have on demand entertainment as well. You have the option to watch one of several movies instead of being forced to watch one.

Remember, not all of the aforementioned amenities are available on all airlines.
