You are certain to find falafels all over Israel, with each stand claiming they have the “perfect” recipe. Try a few of these cheap snacks and make that claim for yourself!
Hummus: A falafel would be a dry ball of chickpeas without its delicious counterpart, hummus. Made from crushed chickpeas, tahini sauce, olive oil, salt, garlic, and a touch of lemon, hummus is mainly served as an appetizer along with warm pita bread at several cafes throughout Israel.
Shawarma: Another extremely popular street food in Israel, shawarma is made up of thin slices of chicken, turkey, or lamb stuffed into a pita with the same ingredients as a falafel. Often more filling than falafel or hummus, shwarma is a cheap alternative for a full midday meal.
Jachnun: Usually only found on the weekends, jachnun is the perfect Saturday morning meal. Made of rolled dough and cooked overnight for around 12 hours, try eating jachnun with a hard-boiled egg, grated tomato, and some spicy skhug.
