Last week we talked about seeing the pyramids after getting a cheap flight to Israel. This week we’ll discuss heading east to see a new wonder of the world, Petra. Getting to Jordan requires a visa, so you may want to take your passport photos now and bring them with you instead of getting them abroad. There are different crossings into Jordan, at Eilat, at Jerusalem, or in the North. Amman is the capital of Jordan and from there you can rent a car or take a bus south to Petra. When returning to Jerusalem you can rent a shared taxi, a shayrutim, which is more affordable than taking a taxi on your own.
From Jerusalem to the border is an hour and it is a further three hours to Petra if you rent a car. It is not allowed to take a rental car across the border. Of course you can also talk to Israel travel agents about getting a tour from Eilat, which, for the entire day can run about $250 per person. When you get your visa at the border, you don’t need a photo, and it’s only about $20.
It’s good to know about the costs of how to get to where you want to go in advance so that if anything changes at the last minute you will know what to do. Good luck!
