Southeast Asia is still really cheap, even when buying business class airline tickets. When you fly to Bangkok you get delicious street food, foot massages and imitation DVDs (if you’re into that). But even better you have thousands of years of Buddhist culture at your fingertips as well as the option to travel to the many surrounding countries.
Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore are all worth visiting and are just a car ride away. It’s easy to stay in fine hotels in these countries (excluding Singapore, which is considerably more expensive) for $20 a night. You can spend $5 a day on three meals and eat delicacies unavailable to us here in the U.S.
The hardest part is getting there, but don’t let that dissuade you — it’s a long flight, and with all the money you’ll save when you’re there, you may as well sleep easy by choosing business class travel.
If you’re going to be traveling to rural areas, you may need some shots. Typhoid, Hepatitis A, B, Japanese encephalitis and routine shots are a good idea to get about a month beforehand. Malaria is only needed if you are traveling to Laos, and if you are, it’s best to stay in nice hotels where insects can’t get in.
