Domestic travel is different from international travel. When you buy cheap tickets to Israel and you see what a different culture is like, it’s easy to come back feeling a little more cultured, a little more worldly, a little haughtier. When you talk to your Brooklyn travel agency about domestic travel and come back from that trip, you seem more hardened, more experienced, not necessarily cultured, but more familiar, wiser.
The world is so big that when you go on a cheap flight to Israel you’re only seeing a tiny portion of it. It’s hard to come back and feel like you know the world. No, you may know Israel, which is pretty cool, but you don’t know the Middle East. When you take a trip to Seattle, you become familiar with a corner of our country. But as Americans, it’s ours — we should know it, in the same way that if you’re Jewish, you should know Israel. But domestic travel is often overlooked, and many people stay in their region, forgetting how much is out there, that there is a whole world to travel, that the neighborhood next to yours is worth exploring.
Travel fosters this sense of exploration, so that we become wiser and more familiar with the world and ourselves by understanding the corners of the world that are important to us.
